To enhance the artistic quality of etched glass, new expressions and new techniques based on free thinking are required.

The discovery of this new technique was made possible through repeated trial and error, starting with improving the blasting machine and researching equipment, tools, and carving methods, without being bound by the limitations of glass (strength issues such as its fragility).
This gives the piece a three-dimensional realism.
As a result of the new techniques, which enhanced the artistic quality, it can be said that etched glass has become closer to glass relief.
Etching trivia

What is etched glass?

Generally speaking, etching brings to mind line drawings printed on copper plates. On the other hand, glass etching uses glass plates instead of copper plates, and is not a printing plate for copperplate printing.
The plate glass itself is a work of art.

Etched glass is made by carving the surface of plate glass with sand (sandblasting) and then processing it with chemicals to create pictures or patterns.
Its main uses are as room dividers (partitions) and door glass.

Paintings, sculptures and reliefs
Between two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional sculpture lies relief.
For example, a landscape that can be expressed in a painting cannot be expressed in a sculpture.
On the other hand, sculpture has the overwhelming power to express the reality of the subject.

From the perspective of art, reliefs combine the diversity of pictorial expression with the realism of sculpture.
In this sense, etched glass may be closer to painting.

Limitations of Etching Glass

When using it for partitions or door glass, it is necessary to consider the risk of it breaking or shattering in the event of an earthquake or other disaster.
Due to the inherent problems of glass, such as its fragility and the fact that it can cut your hands, many restrictions have been placed on the production of etched glass.

These restrictions became a hindrance to free creative work and hindered artistic progress.
When carving into plate glass using sandblasting, the carving is shallow (shallow carving) so as not to weaken the strength of the glass, resulting in a flat, pictorial piece.

Going beyond etched glass to glass relief

Glass relief is not bound by any restrictions and carves the glass to the utmost.
However, it is not a traditional deep engraving.
Simply put, etching is carving the outline, whereas relief carves the inside, resulting in the outline.

Furthermore, deep etching involves carving a large area first (flesh carving) and then carving again on top of that (two-stage carving), which results in a less impressive finished piece.
Based on my experience of relief sculpture in art school, this is a convenient and conceptual approach.

Glass reliefs are carved using not only carving techniques but also a wide variety of other carving methods.
Glass reliefs carved using this method cannot be mass-produced and are one-of-a-kind original pieces (due to the lack of a draft angle).

Safety of glass reliefs
In the pursuit of beauty, glass reliefs are sometimes carved deeply into the glass. Also, safety is a concern as the carved surface may be touched by the hands.
This point has been thoroughly considered and a technical conclusion has been reached.
